Have you ever watched a movie where the protagonist finds a mysterious map, and you're immediately drawn into their quest for hidden treasure? Just like that engaging plot, there's an often-overlooked map in our own lives that can lead us to the treasure of optimal health. This map doesn't point to extreme diets or relentless gym sessions. Instead, it highlights a path paved with joy, laughter, and contentment.
Recent years have seen a surge in studies suggesting a strong correlation between happiness and weight loss. It's an avenue less explored, and yet it holds the promise of not only a healthier body but a joyful spirit.
For instance, a research article from the University of California, Riverside highlighted that individuals who experienced genuine happiness and positivity were more likely to engage in physical activity and make healthier food choices. Another fascinating study from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that positive moods were associated with lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to weight gain, especially in the abdominal area.
Reflecting on personal experiences, I've unlocked keys to times in my life when I was thinner. These moments weren't dictated by strict dietary regimens or intense workouts, but by periods when I was deeply in love, traveling, or simply reveling in happiness.
Isn’t it great to think that lowering stress, increasing happiness and dropping weight all go hand-in-hand? Or does it stress you out just to think that now you have to be happy to lose the weight.
Achieving happiness might seem like chasing a mirage, but it's more attainable than most realize. Remember, our emotions, whether they be joy, sorrow, anger, or anything in between, stem from our thoughts. I previously delved into the concept of the ladder of looping thoughts in another post, but as a quick refresher: our thoughts are the one realm over which we wield true control.
So, how can you cultivate this transformative joy? And how do you take control of your thought loops?
1.
Cultivate a Positive Mindset: Begin each day with a gratitude exercise. Jot down three things you're thankful for. This simple activity can shift your mindset and set a positive tone for the day. And look back over them if you feel your thoughts or moods sliding down a slippery path.
2.
Embrace Affirmations: Stick post-it notes with positive affirmations on your mirror, computer, or any place you frequently visit. Reading and internalizing these can reprogram negative thought patterns. It may seem a bit odd, but it works. Get out your post-its and start writing things like, “I am Enough!”, “You are Significant”, “You matter”, “I am Lovable!”, etc. Experiment with both first-person ("I am") and second-person ("You are") affirmations to discover which resonate more. I like to put them on the fridge and kitchen cupboards in case I’m reaching for a mindless snack and need a friendly reminder.
3.
Delve into Hypnotherapy: Consider hypnotherapy sessions to tap into your subconscious, unravel deep-seated beliefs, and cultivate a positive relationship with food and body. These one-on-one sessions accelerate your confidence and weight loss journey like you wouldn’t believe. Such amazing breakthroughs!
Remember, happiness isn't just the desired outcome of achieving our target weight. It's the powerful catalyst propelling us towards that goal. As we nourish our souls with positivity, our bodies will inevitably follow suit.
