The Things We Don't Notice Until We Do
it's never too late to discover new things

Every now and then, life presents us with moments of clarity, where the mundane suddenly becomes extraordinary, and the familiar turns into a revelation. It's like wearing a pair of glasses for the first time and realizing that trees have individual leaves and not just a green blur.

This summer, I had one such revelation. For the first time, I noticed hummingbird moths. These ethereal creatures, with their delicate wings and hummingbird-like movements, seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. Were they always there, dancing in the sunlight, and I just never saw them? Or had they chosen this particular summer to grace my garden with their presence?

As autumn approached and Halloween decorations began to appear, another realization hit me. The spider webs. They were everywhere. Large, intricate designs spun between trees, across windows, and in every conceivable nook and cranny. And then it dawned on me - the Halloween decorations with their faux spider webs were merely imitating nature. The real webs, spun by industrious spiders preparing for winter, had always been there. I just hadn't noticed.

It's funny how we often miss the obvious. We walk past things every day, our minds preoccupied, our senses dulled by routine. It reminds me of a book I read in college, "The Crying of Lot 49." The protagonist discovers an alternative postal system with its own mailboxes scattered throughout the city. These mailboxes had always been there, but she only began to notice them once she knew they existed.

It's a humbling realization. We pride ourselves on being observant, on noticing details, on being aware of our surroundings. Yet, there's so much we miss. So much that remains hidden in plain sight, waiting for that moment of clarity when we finally see it.

...So, the next time you walk down a familiar path or look out of your window, take a moment to really see. You might just discover a world that's been waiting for you to notice it.

And remember, it's never too late. Whether we're talking about the beauty of nature, the intricacies of our surroundings, or the vast expanse of knowledge and experiences out there, there's always something new to learn and discover. Age, routine, or past oversights shouldn't deter us. Every day presents an opportunity to see with fresh eyes, to understand a little more, and to marvel at the wonders that have always been there, just waiting to be noticed.

Have you ever had a moment where you suddenly noticed something that's always been there? A revelation that made you see the world in a new light? Share your story in the comments below. I'd love to hear from you!
